Around 3 million people in the US are living with Lyme disease, with about 300,000 new cases each year. Lyme disease is highly treatable if caught early. However, if not caught early enough, it can lead to various health issues and become a chronic problem that will cause a range of symptoms.
Treatment through antibiotics can cost as much as $70,000. But, the disease isn’t easily treated with antibiotics alone. Research from the John Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health found that Lyme disease costs the U.S. health care system between $712 million and $1.3 billion a year – or nearly $3,000 per patient on average. These fees include return doctor visits and testing to address the cause of some patients’ chronic symptoms of fatigue, musculoskeletal pain, memory problems, and emotional stress. These visits come after patients have finished their original course of antibiotics, and treatments are needed to treat chronic Lyme disease. What will happen if you get bit again?!
